Please be sure you check to be sure there are no fires in the area you are planning to camp!  You will need a campfire permit for most campsites in Siskiyou County.  They are free, ask any ranger.   Also, note that the National Forest Service Campgrounds (NFS) are often seasonal only.  During Covid-19 double-check that the campgrounds are open.

Dispersed Camping in the National Forests: Much of the forest is available for dispersed camping. This is camping in areas that are not official campsites. To obtain information go to any Forest Ranger Station or stop in at the Klamath National Forest Headquarters in Yreka, California. While at a station pick up a California Campfire Permit while there ~ they are often good for the entire season and free of charge. Please check the National Forest website for information on "dispersed camping".

Oak Bottom Campground

 

 

Brief description:  Forest Service Campground near the Salmon River.  Handicap access.

Open Dates:  May to October

Number of Campsites:  26 sites.  Max RV length 25 ft.  Watch overhead branches.  26 sites are accessible according to the website, however, there are specially marked accessible sites.

Length of Stay:  Not posted.

Fees:  Self-registration.  $10 per night.  At the last visit, a campground host was available in the campground.  There are Reservable sites by calling 877-844-6777 or visiting www.recreation.gov

Location/Address:  Approximately 2 miles east of Somes Bar on primary forest route 93. Good two-lane road.  Lat. 41’ 22’39”  Long. 123’ 27’ 01”

General Description:  Campground is in a mixed conifer and hardwood forest setting.  Leveling might be required.  Local wildlife includes deer, mountain lions, fox, squirrel, and raccoon.  Fishing at nearby Salmon River.  At the last visit, the campground had a camp host and the campground was exceptionally clean as were the vault toilets, etc.  There is poison oak in the area.

Nearby Services:  (groceries, medical, etc.) The nearest towns for groceries and propane are in Somes Bar 2.5 miles away.  (Very limited, however.)  Nearest hospital in Arcata CA 86 miles.  No cell service with AT&T, but a phone may be available via the camp host or at Somes Bar.

Trail Creek Campground

Brief description:  Forest Service Campground near trails and river.  Sites are gravel, as is 1/4 mile of road leading to campground.

Open Dates:  May to October

Number of Campsites:  12 sites.  Max RV length 20 ft.  Some sites may accommodate a larger rig, watch overhead branches.

Length of Stay:  14 days

Fees:  Self-registration.  $10 per night when last stayed

Affiliation:  US Forest Service

Location/Address:  Approximately 13 miles NE of Cecilville on primary forest route 93.  The best route for pulling a trailer is to travel to Callahan, California, and take the Callahan-Cecilville Road (Route 93) 16.6 miles to the Trail Creek Campground.  The campground is located ¼ mile off Route 93, a somewhat steep decline to the campground entrance.

Elevation:  4,700 ft.

General Description:  Campground is in a mixed conifer setting, however, there are some nice places to park a small trailer or RV.  Leveling might be required.  Local wildlife includes deer, bears and birds.  Access to the Pacific Crest Trail is nearby.  Hiking into the Trinity Alps wilderness nearby.  Fishing in nearby Salmon River.

Nearby Services:  (groceries, medical, etc.) The nearest towns for groceries and fuel are Etna, Ft. Jones, and Yreka, CA. (approximately 30 miles)  Nearest emergency health services in Yreka, California is approximately 60 miles.  

Quigley's Store & RV Park

   Quigley's is Now Open!

Located right on the bank of the Klamath River one can find the historic Quigley's Store and RV Park!

As of 2020, there are new owners for Quigley's, and everything has been really improved!  Highly recommend you check it out, grab a beer sit on the deck, and enjoy the river!

While driving down the State of Jefferson Byway (California Hwy 96) one can find Quigley's Store and RV Park. This place is worth a stop even if you aren't ready to call it a day and find a place to camp. Walking inside the store is like a portal to the past, stepping on the oiled tongue and groove wooden floors, and a market that has a little bit of almost everything! The area was formerly visited by President Hoover as he was friends of the original owner, Willis Quigley. They also have a nice little Deli and great spot to eat out on the deck or cozy tables inside. One can find a light meal there for either Breakfast, Lunch, or Dinner ~ if they are open food will be available. The summer months this place is frequently full, but still worth the stop.

If you are looking for a very casual, out of the way place to visit this might be just the ticket! Area attractions include the Klamath National Forest, not to mention the scenic Klamath River with fishing and rafting right at your doorstep. Nearby is a 9 hole golf course, a shooting range, and hunting in the area during appropriate seasons for bear, deer, turkey, and quail. Along the Klamath River, one can watch gold mining operations and learn the area's vast gold mining history.

The RV facilities include cable TV with hookups. There are laundry facilities, a horseshoe pit, a sandy beach along the river, with canoeing, rafting, and kayaking. Thirteen of the 20 RV sites are located along the river with access. The park has 20 amp electrical service, a comfort station, and the roads and sites are gravel. A typical site is 25' X 40' and can accommodate up to a 40' rig. Pets are allowed but must be on a leash.

Directions to Quigleys:
From Yreka travel approximately 8 miles North on Hwy 263 (Historic Hwy 99) until you cross the Klamath River Bridge and then turn left on Hwy 96 (The Jefferson State Byway) then travel 15 miles west. From Interstate-5, turn off at Collier's Rest Stop (North of Yreka) and travel west on Hwy 96 17 miles to Quigley's. The park is on the south side (Riverside) of Hwy 96.

Lover's Camp

Brief description:  Beautiful treed area in the Marble Mountain wilderness area.  Tent camping only.  Many hiking and riding trails in this area.  The camp has 3 areas, corrals for horses and/or mules for packing into the mountains, parking area for livestock trailers, and a nice paved parking area for autos.  Walk into campsites.

Length of Stay:  14 days maximum

Location/Address:  Camp is located approximately 24 miles from Ft. Jones, California off of Hwy 3 and Scott River Road.  From Yreka travel Hwy 3 to Ft. Jones, take the Scott River Road for approximately 14 miles to the Indian Scotty and Lover’s Camp turn off.  (Sign post is well marked at turn).  Travel past Indian Scotty Camp and continue on the one lane paved road for 8 miles.  Some parts of the road are steep, and it is a winding road.  Watch for oncoming traffic, there are turnouts available.  In the spring runoff some places the water may cross the road.  The campground has essentially 3 areas, the first is horse corrals, the second area has the sign for the campground and the area is available for camping and parking livestock trailers.  Continue past the camping area sign for about ¼ mile and there will be a large paved parking lot adjacent to walk in campsites.

General Description:  Located in the trees with views of the Marble Mountain Wilderness.  Tent camping areas only, walk in.  Deer, bears, and birds frequent the area.  No trash service, no drinking water.  Bring in your own water, as well as water for dowsing campfires.  Remove all trash you bring in as well as clean up after dogs, and pack out.  Dogs on leash only.  Summers are moderate.  Contact the Forest Service for Packing Outfitters who are authorized to operate in the area.  Many trails give access to the Marble Mountain Wilderness via Canyon Creek and Red Rock Trails.  This is a lightly used campground.

Nearby Services:  (groceries, medical, etc.)  Nearest fuel and food located in Ft. Jones, approximately 24 miles.  Nearest Emergency room access would be Fairchild Medical Center in Yreka, approximately 42 miles.  Major supplies available in Yreka, California (42 miles).

Algoma Campground

Brief description:  Primitive and somewhat remote campground next to a lovely stream.

Open Dates:  Open all year ~ weather permitting road access.

Number of Campsites:  8 sites developed by users.  Max RV length 24 ft.  (Not all spots will accommodate this length)  Area is often used by tent campers.

Length of Stay:  14 days

Fees:  FREE ~ self-registration

Affiliation:  US Forest Service

Location/Address:  From the McCloud Ranger Station, travel east on Hwy 89 towards Lassen.  Drive approximately 13 miles and look for a small brown sign on the south side of the road that shows a cross country skier sign.  Turn right and drive down Forest Service Road # 39N06 for approximately one mile.  You will cross a one lane bridge and the campground will be on your right.

Elevation:  3,800 ft.

General Description:  Camping spots are located on both sides of the river and the road in a dirt area; some of the access to camp areas is not suitable for trailers (large dips in entrance).  However, there are some nice places to park a small trailer or RV.  Leveling might be required.  Lovely trees, brush and rushing creek in the area.  Bears could visit campsites.  The campground is located at the terminus of the McCloud River Trail, about 12 miles from Lower Falls. 

Nearby Services:  (groceries, medical, etc.) Nearest towns for groceries and fuel are Mt. Shasta (approx. 25 miles) and McCloud, California (approx. 13 miles).  Nearest hospital and ER at Mt. Shasta City:  Mercy Medical Center, 914 Pine Street, Mt. Shasta, CA  96067.  (530) 926-6111.

Iron Gate Reservoir Camping

Brief description:  Iron Gate Reservoir is located about 10 miles east of Interstate 5 and continues upstream to Copco Reservoir.  The road to Iron Gate Reservoir is about 15 miles north of Yreka, CA off of Interstate 5.  Popular for boating, water skiing, and fishing.

Open Dates:  Campgrounds at Iron Gate Reservoir are being closed to the public as of May 12, 2023.  The Dam that created the lake is going to be demolished.  

Number of Campsites:  Camp Creek:  22 sites; Juniper Point Camp:   9 sites; Mirror Cove Camp:  10 sites.  Sometimes camping may be available in other day use areas.

Length of Stay:  14 days maximum

Fees:  FREE!  No charge for camping, boat launching, etc.  No reservations first come first served.

Affiliation:  Pacific Power (PacifiCorp) campgrounds and Bureau of Land Management.

Location/Address:  From the Hornbrook/Henley Interstate 5 exit (#789) go in an easterly direction.  There are small road signs near the exit.  Travel approximately 10 to 11 miles on county roads until you reach the sign that shows the general reservoir and camping areas.  It is located along the Klamath River.  Once at the entrance near the fish hatchery, depending on the campground selected you may travel another 4 or 5 miles, perhaps more.  Many of the sites are located along the lake’s west side and the lake is 7 miles long.  The roads are paved up to the turn offs into the camping areas (gravel) but are often in need of some repair.  Suggest one drives slowly due to open range and deer, cattle or horses could be on the road. 

Wildlife:  Squirrels, pelicans, sea gulls, numerous types of birds of prey, possible deer or raccoon's.  In the warm days and months be  aware there are snakes in the area.  Both rattlesnakes and others.

Mirror Cove Campground

General Description:  Rolling type hills with small oaks and brush.  Reservoir.  Can be windy but often the water is good for water skiing; generally the wind comes up in the afternoon for 2 or 3 hours and then subsides during the summer months.  Can be very warm during the days in the summer, but evenings usually cool down somewhat.  Spring is the nicest time in the area, with nice days and cool nights.  In the spring the hills are generally still green and lush, in the summer the area becomes very dry on the surrounding hills.  During warm months be aware of rattlesnakes in the area, especially when hiking.  Minimal cell phone reception in the area.  Only one camp area has potable water.

 

Camp Creek Campground

Nearby Services:  (groceries, medical, etc.)  Nearest fuel is at the exit at Hornbrook along Interstate 5.  Nearest hospital and medical services in Yreka, California approximately 15 miles from Hornbrook and 25+ miles from camp grounds.  Some food or restaurants available in Hornbrook, but nearest full service area would be Yreka.  Yreka would have supplies, equipment, auto repair, fuel, groceries and medical care.  A small restaurant is located near a commercial campground (The Fish Hook Restaurant) about 5 miles from the entrance to the reservoir area.

Juanita Lake Campground

Juanita Lake Campground

Along Hwy 97, near Macdoel

Brief description:  Campground set among fir trees with lake and mountain views.  Juanita Lake is a man made 55 acre lake regularly stocked with trout.  Bass and catfish are also caught at the lake.  There is a barrier free trail that circles the lake.

Open Dates:  May through October

Number of Campsites:  23 campsites with one double site  ~ 1  Large (50 person) group campsite.  Maximum spur 30 feet.    Group site is by reservation only. 

Length of Stay:  14 Days

Fees:  $15 per night, $20 per night for double site (#14) and $50 per night for Group Camping site.  Extra charges may occur for additional vehicles

Restrictions:  No motorized boats on the lake (no gas or electric motors).  Dogs must be on leash.  No ATV use.  No bicycles on the trails.

Location/Address:  Approximately 10 miles from Macdoel, California off of Hwy 97.  About 4 miles south of Macdoel look for Ball Mountain Road and go west approximately 3 miles to Forest Route 46N04, travel approximately 4 miles on Route 46N04 to campground.

Elevation:  Approx. 5100 feet.

General Description:  A man made mountain lake, popular for fishing.  Nice camping area adjacent to the lake (not on the lake).  Mild days, medium usage.  Prepare for possible ticks and mosquitoes.  Deer and bobcats in area.   The lake remains at a fairly constant level, and the water in the lake is very cold year round.

Nearby Services:  Fuel, and groceries (minimal) about 8 miles in Mt. Hebron or 10 miles in Macdoel both very small towns.  Nearest medical facility would be in Klamath Falls, Oregon approximately 59 miles north on Hwy 97 or Mercy Medical Center in Mt. Shasta, CA south on Hwy 97 at 62 miles away.

Kangaroo Lake & Campground

Affiliation:  National Forest Service Campground and Day Use Area


Number of Campsites:  15 sites that will accommodate both RV's and tents, 5 sites that will accommodate walk in tent sites.  Many sites can accommodate handicapped access.  Maximum length for RV 45 feet.  No hookups for RV's.

Maximum Stay:  14 Days.  Open May to October, weather permitting.

Price for camping:  $15 a night, Golden Age Passport accepted for 50% discount.

Reservation Information:  No reservation policy.  First come first served.  Checkout time is 2:00 p.m.  It is a local favorite, but if sites are full when you arrive, wait in the day use area and speak to the Camp Host to see if a spot may open up that afternoon.

Campfire permits:  Be sure and inquire via Forest Service Station regarding campfire permits.  They may be needed for many areas even for a small barbecue.  Campfire permits are free.

Elevation:  Approximately 6,500 ft.

General description:  A lovely camping area at a high mountain lake that is accessible by automobile.  The campground was refurbished in the last few years and at this writing is in very nice conditions.  There is disabled access to both camping sites and the lake.

The lake is approximately 25 acres in size and at the 100 feet deep at the deepest level.  In the summer months the lake is regularly stocked with fish.  There are brook and brown trout native to the lake, and rainbow trout can also be caught.

Wildlife in the area may include:  deer, bears, birds, chipmunks, as well as an occasional bobcat or mountain lion.

Directions to Lake and Camp:  Traveling south along Interstate 5:  Take the Highway 3 exit at Yreka, California and travel to Callahan, approximately 45+ miles.  A short distance past Callahan take the Callahan-Gazelle Road (watch for well marked road sign) for about 10 miles to Rail Creek Road (The Kangaroo Lake Turnoff).  The road into the lake from this point is about 8 miles and most of the road is single lane and winds around the mountain.  There are numerous pullouts to access to allow a vehicle traveling the other direction to pass.  If one has a large RV or long rig use caution.  The road is paved and in good shape.  Traveling north along Interstate 5:  Take the Edgewood/Gazelle exit just past the town of Weed, California.  In the very small town of Gazelle (no services) turn west at the road to Callahan.  Travel along this road approximately 25 miles to the Kangaroo Lake turnoff at Rail Creek Road.  There is signage marking the turnoff to the lake.  The road into the lake from this point is about 8 miles and most of the road is a single lane and winds around the mountain.  There are numerous pullouts to access to allow a vehicle traveling in the other direction to pass.  If one has a large RV or long rig use caution and keep an eye out for oncoming traffic.  The road is paved and in good shape.

• Trails from the lake area intersect with the Pacific Crest Trail
• Wonderful birder area, observe Osprey's, Bald Eagles and others

Supplies:  Supplies are available in Yreka, Etna, Fort Jones, Weed, and Mt. Shasta City for full service.  Small store located in Callahan.  Fuel available in Yreka, Etna, Ft. Jones, Weed, and Mt. Shasta City.  Nearest supplies would be in Callahan or Etna.

Emergency:  Full service Emergency Room in Yreka at Fairchild Medical Center also a ER available at Mt. Shasta City.

Number of Campsites: Unknown, but large area could easily accommodate up to 10 - 15 campsites depending on size of vehicle or tents. Large motor homes could access places to camp in this area.

Location/Address: Located on Hwy 96 west of Interstate 5. Approximately 3 miles from the Tree of Heaven campsites and 14 miles from Yreka.

Directions from Yreka: Take any of the Yreka exits from Interstate 5 into Yreka towards the west. Take Main Street going north (approximately 1 block from Interstate). Main Street in Yreka is the historic Hwy 99, currently known as Hwy 263. Travel about 7 miles north on old Hwy 99 (263) to the intersection of Hwy 96 after just crossing the bridge over the Klamath River. Turn left (west) onto Hwy 96. (Hwy 96 is the State of Jefferson Highway). Travel approximately 7 miles and look for the Skeahan Bar River Access almost adjacent to the Cayuse Day use area. The river access will be on the river side (south side) of the road.

This is a commercial establishment open from April 1 through October 31, snow levels permitting opening. Close to Interstate 5 at Mt. Shasta City. Great for weekend or longer camping, and a pleasant place to stay while traveling I-5 en route. The campground offers a wide variety of camp spaces from full hook up, to water and electric only, to simple tent spots. Cabins and other accommodations are also available.

Great fishing, boating, swimming, relaxing, and a nice hiking trail around the lake. Nice boat ramp. Convenience store on site as well as small eatery with pizza and similar foods. Total number of camping spots unknown but there are over 200, information can be obtained during the season via phone, and some information can be found at their website listed below.

Lake Siskiyou is a local favorite for day use as well as for longer camping, some campsites are near the lake and others are a bit more secluded. The images above show a photo of the lake at the marina with the fishing dock in view along with Mt. Shasta in the background and the image on the right shows a sample of one of the campsites along the main road in the park ~ please note this image was taken when the campground was closed during winter. Summers generally have pleasant days and a bit cooler evenings.

How to get there: From Interstate 5 take the Central Mt. Shasta exit at W. Ream Avenue. Travel West. Go to the stop sign at Forest Route #26 (aka as West A. Barr Rd.) and travel South. (turn left) Continue on West A. Barr Rd. (Forest Route #26), stay to the right when you come to a Y in the road. Travel past the Mt. Shasta Resort Golf Course (will be to the South) and continue down this road. Shortly past the Golf Course Lake Siskiyou will be visible as you cross a small bridge. Continue on this road for a couple of miles as you travel around the West side of the Lake. Look for signage at the entrance on your right.

General description: Campground is located in forested area adjacent to Hwy 96. Shaded area in trees and mountains alongside Klamath River. Undergrowth is dry in late summer. Trails near the campground. Seasonal trout and steelhead fishing. Wildlife includes black bears, deer, mountain lions, and birds of prey. Poison oak may be in the area. Campsites offer picnic tables and grills. Campground may fill quickly during summer holiday weekends. Roads within camping area may be rocky or bumpy. Campsite roads are dirt.

Services: Nearby store for basic supplies, 9 miles to the small town of Seiad Valley, 18 miles to Happy Camp. Nearest Hospital: Yreka

Directions from Yreka: Follow Main Street out of town (also known as Hwy 263, Hwy 3 and old Hwy 99) north. Follow the Shasta River until the road intersects Hwy 96 (about 7 miles). Turn west and follow the Klamath River on Hwy 96 approximately 33 miles. Once you cross Scott River Bridge look to your right for campground.

Notes: This is one of those great campgrounds loved by locals. Quiet and beautiful. Right on the lovely Scott River. Great for tent campers, trailers, RV's, etc.

Location/address: Located off of Scott River Road approximately 14 miles from the town of Ft. Jones.

From Interstate 5: Exit at Yreka, exit # 773 (most southern exit) go west to intersection of S. Main St. and Ft. Jones Road (Hwy 3). Turn and go southwest on Hwy 3 about 17 miles to Ft. Jones. Some steep hills to note if pulling a trailer. At Ft. Jones continue through town until you reach the intersection of Scott River Road. Turn west on Scott River Road (County Rd. 7F01) about 18 miles. The road will eventually narrow, but is passable. Watch for Forest Route 44N45 on left across bridge. Indian Scotty Campground will be ½ mile on right.

Services: Groceries and supplies available in Yreka and Ft. Jones. Hospital in Ft. Jones and Yreka.
