Algoma Campground




Brief description:  Primitive and somewhat remote campground next to a lovely stream.

Open Dates:  Open all year ~ weather permitting road access.

Number of Campsites:  8 sites developed by users.  Max RV length 24 ft.  (Not all spots will accommodate this length)  Area is often used by tent campers.

Length of Stay:  14 days

Fees:  FREE ~ self-registration

Affiliation:  US Forest Service

Location/Address:  From the McCloud Ranger Station, travel east on Hwy 89 towards Lassen.  Drive approximately 13 miles and look for a small brown sign on the south side of the road that shows a cross country skier sign.  Turn right and drive down Forest Service Road # 39N06 for approximately one mile.  You will cross a one lane bridge and the campground will be on your right.


Elevation:  3,800 ft.

General Description:  Camping spots are located on both sides of the river and the road in a dirt area; some of the access to camp areas is not suitable for trailers (large dips in entrance).  However, there are some nice places to park a small trailer or RV.  Leveling might be required.  Lovely trees, brush and rushing creek in the area.  Bears could visit campsites.  The campground is located at the terminus of the McCloud River Trail, about 12 miles from Lower Falls. 



Nearby Services:  (groceries, medical, etc.) Nearest towns for groceries and fuel are Mt. Shasta (approx. 25 miles) and McCloud, California (approx. 13 miles).  Nearest hospital and ER at Mt. Shasta City:  Mercy Medical Center, 914 Pine Street, Mt. Shasta, CA  96067.  (530) 926-6111.

Brief description:  Nice campground at approximately the 4,400 ft level.  The campground follows the inviting Hat Creek, a haven for trout fly fisherpersons.

Open Dates:  April – October weather permitting.

Number of Campsites:  Over 70 single sites and 3 group sites.  Maximum spur about 20 feet.

Length of Stay:  14 days


Fees:  $16 per site.  Golden Age passport gives a 50% discount.

Affiliation:  National Forest Campground

Location/Address:  Located 26 miles from Burney, California one mile from Old Station along Hwy 89 near the intersection of State Route 44 and 89.

Elevation:  4,400 ft.

 General Description:  Large campground in and among Ponderosa and Jeffery pines along the bank of Hat Creek.  The area is renowned for fly fishing in the swift, cold waters of Hat Creek.  Busy during the summer.  Accessible fishing access.  Near Lassen National Park.  


Nearby Services:  (groceries, medical, etc.)  Old Station Visitor’s Center is nearby.  Full service market at Burney, CA approximately 19 miles.  Nearest medical services at:

Fowlers Camp (NFS)

Please note:  August 2021, Fowler's Campground is closed until further notice due to an assertive black bear that continues to roam the campground.

Affiliation: National Forest Service Campground Number of Campsites: 39 campsites, Maximum spur for trailers, 32'. Length of Stay: 14 day, first come, first served. Location/address: Shasta-Trinity National Forest, McCloud Ranger Station. Approximately 5.5 miles east of McCloud off of State Highway 89. (15 miles East from Interstate 5 off Highway 89) Elevation: 3,400 ft. Fee: $15 per night. Self-registration station. Season: May - October
Directions: Near Mt. Shasta City take the Highway 89 turn off from Interstate 5 and travel east for approximately 15 miles. Look for the sign that points to the south that indicates the way to Fowler Camp and Lower Falls. Travel south approximately 1 mile. Watch for sign at fork in road and go left to campground. General Description: Lovely campground with camp host during season. Two loops with campsites. Mature trees. Good fishing and easy river access. Campsites are "smallish" and most may not accommodate two vehicles, however, some sites were available for slightly larger parties. Summertime can be busy at this campground, early arrival may be recommended. Campground is suitable for mid-sized RV's and trailers as well as for tents. Nearby Services: Groceries in McCloud approximately 5.5 miles, west of the camp off of Highway 89. Hospital in Mt. Shasta City approximately 18 miles.
