Along the I-5 Corridor

Things to do and see along the I-5 Corridor from Dunsmuir to the Oregon Border:

Dunsmuir:

  • Dunsmuir Railroad Depot Museum. 4103 Pine Street, Dunsmuir, CA (530) 235-0929. Open 3rd Saturday of each month. 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Mt. Shasta City:
  • Sisson Museum. 1 North Old Stage Road, Mt. Shasta, CA (530) 926-5508. Also located right next to the State Fish Hatchery. Feed the fish!
  • Places to eat in Mt. Shasta City:
  1. Lily's Restaurant. 1013 South Mt. Shasta Blvd., Mt. Shasta. (530) 926-3372.

Weed:
  • Lumberman Historical Museum. 303 Gilman Ave., Weed, CA (530) 938-0550 Open end of May-September.
  • Climb Black Butte. Stop at the Ranger Station in Mt. Shasta City for details, maps, directions. The climb takes from 2 to 3 hours depending on your condition. This is a "hike" not a stroll up the mountain! You will ascend something like 1800 feet! The view at the top is a great 360 and Mt. Shasta can be viewed in a spectacular way!

Yreka:
  • Siskiyou County Museum. A county treasure! Learn about the discovery of gold in our area (the "second" motherlode!), the coming of the trains, local original Indians, Logging, and so much more. 910 S. Main Street, Yreka, CA. (530) 842-3836. Take Yreka Central Exit, turn left (South) on Main Street, drive about 1/2 mile. Museum will be on east side of road.
  • Siskiyou County Courthouse and the largest gold exhibit South of the Yukon! 311 Fourth Street, Yreka, CA.
  • National Historic District, Yreka, CA. Take Yreka Central Exit, turn West, follow sign to "Old Town". Visit the Yreka Chamber of Commerce to pick up a walking or driving tour map of homes and the business district. A real treat! Yreka Chamber of Commerce, 117 West Miner St., Yreka, CA.   • Ley Station Fire Museum. A small museum with vintage fire truck and accessories. Go to the corner of Miner Street and Oregon Streets in Yreka at the west end of the National Historic business area.
  • Visit Greenhorn Park. Relax, fish, picnic, or let the kids play in the kids area. Greenhorn Road, Yreka. Take the first exit off of I-5, go West, turn right at first stoplight (Main St.) and drive North to Greenhorn Road. (3rd road going left) Turn left. Drive past businesses until you see the lake and entrance.
  • Places to Eat in Yreka: Below are some of the places I recommend as a "local".
  1. Linda's Soup Cafe ~ 1812 Fort Jones Road, Yreka. (530) 842-5236. Great place for sandwiches and soup! Located in the Raley's Shopping Center at the first (Southernmost) Exit from I-5. Just past McDonald's and the other fast food places. It is in the corner of the shopping center. Great alternative to "fast food", lots of parking in parking lot.
  2. The Brickhouse Bakery and Pizza ~ 313 West Miner Street, Yreka. (530) 841-0553. In the middle of "Old Town" in the National Historic District. Take the Central Yreka Exit from I-5 and go West, you will be on West Miner Street. Parking is available behind the restaurant.
  3. The Tasty Q ~ 117 West Miner Street, Yreka. (530) 842-9727. Located inside the Chamber of Commerce Information Center. Closed Sunday and evenings. Great sandwiches, will prepare to go. Take the Central Yreka Exit from I-5 and go West, first block past stop light.
  4. Gold Rush Burgers ~ 1240 South Main Street, Yreka. (530) 842-2177. Take first exit off of I-5 go West to Main Street, turn North. Located on "old 99" (Main Street) Simple little building... great burgers.
  5. Village Grind ~ 400 West Miner Street, Yreka. (530) 842-4607. Located in the National Historic District. Sandwiches, Coffee, Espresso. Free Wi-fi. Take Central Yreka Exit from I-5 and go West, about 3 blocks past stop light.

Things to See and Do Along Hwy 97

From the intersection of I-5 at Weed, California to the Oregon State Line

  • Pluto's Cave ~ Pluto's Cave was formed by an eruption of basaltic lava and is one of the main feeder tubes that carried lava into Shasta Valley. This cave has a large diameter and an established trail. Contact the Klamath National Forest, Goosenest Ranger District at 37805 Highway 97, Macdoel, California 96058 or call (530) 398-4391. This cave is located near Road A-12 about 3.3 miles from Highway 97. Be sure you follow good caving rules, stay on the trail, bring extra flashlights, protect the cave's delicate ecosystem.
  • Mt. Shasta Lavender Farms ~ Open during mid-June to mid-July. (530) 926-2651 Pick Lavender, walk the Lavender Labyrinth, visit the unique Lavender Shop. Take Road A-12 to the west off of Hwy 97 a few miles north of Weed, Turn on Harry Cash Road, go about 1 1/2 miles, entrance will be at the east. For more details view their web page at: Mt.   • Visit the Living Memorial Sculpture Garden ~ One will find the Sculpture Garden about 13 miles North of Weed on Hwy 97. It was created by Vietnam veteran, Dennis Smith. It is just past the road A-12 that takes one to the Lavender Farms. See it on the west side of the road. Parking and restrooms are available. Free admission.
  • Visit Butte Valley Museum ~ Located at 500 Butte Street, Dorris, CA. (530) 397-2707. Open seasonally. Call first for hours.

Things to See and Do on Highway 96

Highway 96 from Interstate 5 to Weitchpec at Hwy 169:
Note: When you start your journey down Hwy 96, be sure you have fuel and your supplies!

  • Enjoy the Scenery the entire way!
  • Check out river rafting possibilities.
  • Enjoy the many river access points along the Klamath and enjoy fishing!
  • Stop at Quigley's Store at Klamath River,CA for a cold drink and good deli sandwich or hot soup and coffee. (Don't blink, you'll miss it!) (530) 465-2224.
  • Look for the Walker Bridge, built circa 1910 ~ still in use today!
  • Several nice Forest Service Campgrounds along the road, check them out!

Turn East towards the Train Station and follow the frontage road, which is South Foothill Drive, follow the road to the end and a small portion of State Street will be found. Keep going, it will seem like you aren't in the right place, you should find it. Please note this location is not easily accessible for large rigs, turn around areas are street width.
