Dispersed Camping in the National Forests:

Much of the forest is available to dispersed camping. This is camping in areas that are not official campsites. To obtain information go to any Forest Ranger Station or stop in at the Klamath National Forest Headquarters in Yreka, California. While at a station pick up a California Campfire Permit while there ~ they are often good for the entire season and free of charge. Please check the National Forest website for information on "dispersed camping".

Cattle Camp

Affiliation: National Forest Service Campground

Number of Campsites: 27 Sites, Maximum Spur for trailers, 32 feet.

Length of Stay: 14 days, first come, first served. No reservations.

Location/address: Shasta-Trinity National Forest, McCloud Ranger Station. Approximately 10 1/2 miles from the McCloud Ranger Station along Hwy 89. Look for campground sign on the south side of the road, turn and go about another 1/2 mile (or less) and look for the sign Cattle Camp and the entrance.

Elevation: 3,700 ft.

Fee: $15 per night, self registration. Holders of Senior and Access Passports are entitled to a 50% reduction in nightly fees.

Season: May to October

General Description: Lovely campground area, very popular in the summer months, arrive early to obtain a campsite. The Upper McCloud River is a major attraction in the area with trails to lovely falls, middle, upper and lower falls. Campsites will accommodate mid-sized trailers and tents nicely.

Nearby services: Groceries, restaurants, shopping located in McCloud (about 11 miles to the west) and Mt. Shasta City about 25 miles to the west and north). Hospital located in Mt. Shasta City.

McBride Springs Camp

McBride Springs Camp is located on the base of Mt. Shasta.

Closed for the 2010 Season for hazardous tree removal. Check with the Shasta-Trinity National Forest Service for status.

This camp is only a few miles off of Interstate 5, but at the 4,800 elevation mark so there is a pull up the hill for automobiles.

Affiliation: National Forest Service Campground ~ Shasta-Trinity National Forest.

Number of Campsites: 10 campsites total. Suitable for small RV's and trailers. The average parking area is 12' x 39' on gravel bed. Some campsites are in treed areas, other open. No RV hookups or pull-through sites.

Description: The campsites are all on a single loop, but many are secluded and offer privacy. The campground provides a good base for exploring Mt. Shasta. Nice views can be seen of the valley area below. McBride Springs creek (small and seasonal) runs through the campground.

Open Dates: Seasonal ~ Open Memorial Day weekend through October 31 snow level permitting.

Length of Stay: 7 days

Elevation: Approximately 4,800 feet.

Fee: $10 - 15 per day , check with local Ranger Station for current rates. Self-registration at entrance, first come, first served. No reservations.

Location/Directions: Exit #738 heading North on Interstate 5 and travel east on Lake Street into Mt. Shasta City. Lake Street will dead end on Everett Memorial Highway. Turn left and head up the hill on Everett Memorial Highway, travel approximately 4 miles to Campground. The Campground will be on the left.

Brown Bear River Access/Camping

Elevation: approximately 1600 feet.

Klamath National Forest Alerts

Location: Alongside Highway 96 (State of Jefferson Highway) approximately 2 miles east of the small settlement of Horse Creek, CA or approximately 30 miles from Yreka on Hwy 96.

Directions from Yreka: Accessible off of Interstate 5 at Yreka, CA. From Yreka take Main Street going north. Main Street is Historic Highway 99, currently known as Highway 263 or Hwy 3. Travel about 7 miles to intersect Highway 96 (State of Jefferson Highway). Take a hard left and travel approximately 30 miles west. Look for signs for river access (easily visible when heading East). The river access/camping area will be on the river side of the road.

Number of Campsites: Unknown, but large area could easily accommodate up to 10 - 15 campsites depending on size of vehicle or tents. Large motor homes could access places to camp in this area.

Fire permits required for this area, available at Klamath National Forest Headquarters in Yreka.

Open Dates: Year round

Length of Stay: 14 Days Maximum

Elevation: Approximately 1600 feet

Fee: None!

Location/Address: Located on Hwy 96 west of Interstate 5. Approximately 3 miles from the Tree of Heaven campsites and 14 miles from Yreka.

Directions from Yreka: Take any of the Yreka exits from Interstate 5 into Yreka towards the west. Take Main Street going north (approximately 1 block from Interstate). Main Street in Yreka is the historic Hwy 99, currently known as Hwy 263. Travel about 7 miles north on old Hwy 99 (263) to the intersection of Hwy 96 after just crossing the bridge over the Klamath River. Turn left (west) onto Hwy 96. (Hwy 96 is the State of Jefferson Highway). Travel approximately 7 miles and look for the Skeahan Bar River Access almost adjacent to the Cayuse Day use area. The river access will be on the river side (south side) of the road.

Fowlers Camp (NFS)

Number of Campsites: 39 campsites, Maximum spur for trailers, 32'.

Length of Stay: 14 day, first come, first served.

Location/address: Shasta-Trinity National Forest, McCloud Ranger Station. Approximately 5.5 miles east of McCloud off of State Highway 89. (15 miles East from Interstate 5 off Highway 89)

Elevation: 3,400 ft.

Fee: $15 per night. Self-registration station.

Season: May - October

Directions: Near Mt. Shasta City take the Highway 89 turn off from Interstate 5 and travel east for approximately 15 miles. Look for the sign that points to the south that indicates the way to Fowler Camp and Lower Falls. Travel south approximately 1 mile. Watch for sign at fork in road and go left to campground. All roads are paved, even within the campground. Good signage for directions.

General Description: Lovely campground with camp host during season. Two loops with campsites. Mature trees. Good fishing and easy river access. Campsites are "smallish" and most may not accommodate two vehicles, however, some sites were available for slightly larger parties. Summertime can be busy at this campground, early arrival may be recommended. Campground is suitable for mid-sized RV's and trailers as well as for tents.

Nearby Services: Groceries in McCloud approximately 5.5 miles, west of the camp off of Highway 89. Hospital in Mt. Shasta City approximately 18 miles.

Etna ~ Mountain Village RV Park

The Mountain Village RV Park is a commercial venture and is located just at the edge of town. If one is driving in on Hwy. 3 from Fort Jones and Yreka it will be just to your left as you enter town. You will come to an intersection that will head into town, continue on Hwy 3. Look for a Shell Gas Station within 1/4 mile or so and you will also see the sign for Mountain Village RV Park. It is easy to find.

This RV Park was built about 10 years ago and has nice pull through spots and grassy areas. The trees aren't full grown yet, but it is a pleasant spot with a nice view of the mountains and the valley. They have full amenities including wi-fi, laundry, cable, 50 foot length sites, ADA accessible bathrooms and a children's play area. They can accommodate electrical needs at 20, 30, and 50 Amps.

If you are looking for a nice spot to camp and to see sites off the beaten path, this just might be the ticket! Etna is a charming little town that has its roots in the area Gold Rush in during the 1850's and 1860's. They have a small, but nice museum, a micro-brewery that not only has beer, but great root beer, the Etna Brewery, and the Scott Valley Drug Store (see photo at right) in Etna is a place not to be missed ~ great ice cream, soda fountain, working pharmacy, souvenirs from the area including gold jewelry from the area and a wonderful building! There are wonderful old Victorian homes and buildings and stunning scenery in the area.

Things to do and see along the I-5 Corridor from Dunsmuir to the Oregon Border:

You will also find the route from Dunsmuir to the Oregon Border filled with stunning photographic opportunities, please stop and take a photo or two!

Dunsmuir:

Dunsmuir Railroad Depot Museum. 4103 Pine Street, Dunsmuir, CA (530) 235-0929. Open 3rd Saturday of each month. 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Dunsmuir Botanical Gardens. A wonderful place to stop and stretch your legs or have a picnic. The gardens are set in a lovely wooded area, with picnic sites and a playground and all near the Upper Sacramento River.
Tauhindauli Park. Right under the bridge that crosses the Sacramento River in Dunsmuir is this great park named after a Wintu Indian. You will find multi-use trails, and handicap accessible picnic areas and restrooms.

Mt. Shasta City:

Sisson Museum. 1 North Old Stage Road, Mt. Shasta, CA (530) 926-5508. Also located right next to the State Fish Hatchery. Feed the fish!
Stop at the Headwaters of the Sacramento River at Mt. Shasta City Park. Picnic, take a nice walk along the waters, fill up your water container with the best water on earth!

Weed:

Lumberman Historical Museum. 303 Gilman Ave., Weed, CA (530) 938-0550 Open end of May-September.
Climb Black Butte. Stop at the Ranger Station in Mt. Shasta City for details, maps, directions. The climb takes from 2 to 3 hours depending on your condition. This is a "hike" not a stroll up the mountain! You will ascend something like 1800 feet! The view at the top is a great 360 and Mt. Shasta can be viewed in a spectacular way!
Play Frisbee Golf. College of the Siskiyous has a Frisbee golf course adjacent to the campus. The course threads through the trees... bring your own Frisbees and get both exercise and have fun!
Mt. Shasta Brewing Company. Tour this small brewery that advertises to "try Legal Weed'. Weed Ale House and Bistro, open 7 days a week beginning at noon.

Grenada: (Small town between Weed and Yreka)

Take a little drive (about 15+ miles) out to the Mt. Shasta Lavender Farms. Open in July when flowers are in bloom. 9:00 - 4:00 daily. Truly worth a visit, be sure and take your camera! Mt. Shasta Lavender Farms, 9706 Harry Cash Road, Montague, CA Phone: (530) 926-2651

Yreka:

Siskiyou County Museum. A county treasure! Learn about the discovery of gold in our area (the "second" motherlode!), the coming of the trains, local original Indians, Logging, and so much more. 910 S. Main Street, Yreka, CA. (530) 842-3836. Take Yreka Central Exit, turn left (South) on Main Street, drive about 1/2 mile. Museum will be on east side of road. The majority of the time parking for RV and trailers can be accommodated. If not, there are large parking areas across the street.
Siskiyou County Courthouse and the largest gold exhibit South of the Yukon! 311 Fourth Street, Yreka, CA.
St. Mark's Preservation Square, 300-304 Lane Street, right across from the county courthouse! Take a tour of the former church built in 1880, get lots of local history information, what to see and do in the area, and pick up a walking brochure of Courthouse Square! Yreka Preservation.
National Historic District, Yreka, CA. Take Yreka Central Exit, turn West, follow sign to "Old Town". Visit the Yreka Chamber of Commerce to pick up a walking or driving tour map of homes and the business district. A real treat! Yreka Chamber of Commerce, 117 West Miner St., Yreka, CA. Ley Station Fire Museum. A small museum with vintage fire truck and accessories. Go to the corner of Miner Street and Oregon Streets in Yreka at the west end of the National Historic business area.
Art Galleries, Gift Shops, Antiques, Book Stores, Restaurants: Visit Old Town Yreka and also travel down Broadway to find interesting shops! Be sure not to miss Shoppe Serendipity for local handcrafted items and gifts.
Visit Greenhorn Park. Relax, fish, picnic, or let the kids play in the kids area. Greenhorn Road, Yreka. Take the first exit off of I-5, go West, turn right at first stoplight (Main St.) and drive North to Greenhorn Road. (3rd road going left) Turn left. Drive past businesses until you see the lake and entrance.
Local guide service: Take off on an adventure and have a local drive and guide you into the back country for a day, take a "suburban safari".
Places to Eat in Yreka: Below are some of the places I recommend as a "local".

Linda's Soup Cafe ~ 1812 Fort Jones Road, Yreka. (530) 842-5236. Great place for sandwiches and soup! Located in the Raley's Shopping Center at the first (Southernmost) Exit from I-5. Just past McDonald's and the other fast food places. It is in the corner of the shopping center. Great alternative to "fast food", lots of parking in parking lot.
The Brickhouse Bakery and Pizza ~ 313 West Miner Street, Yreka. (530) 841-0553. In the middle of "Old Town" in the National Historic District. Take the Central Yreka Exit from I-5 and go West, you will be on West Miner Street. Parking is available behind the restaurant.
The Tasty Q ~ 117 West Miner Street, Yreka. (530) 842-9727. Located inside the Chamber of Commerce Information Center. Closed Sunday and evenings. Take the Central Yreka Exit from I-5 and go West, first block past stop light.
Nature's Kitchen ~ Bakery, Cafe & Natural Foods Store. Old Bottling Works Shopping Mall, 412 South Main Street (old Hwy 99) Yreka, California. (530) 842-1136.
Klander's Deli ~ 211 South Oregon Street, Yreka, California 96097. (530) 842-3806. Just one block off of Miner Street, Great Sandwiches! This is one of those great "Mom & Pop" type places.
The Audacity & Cafe ~ Deli style cafe along with music and entertainment. Free wi-fi! Friendly folks. Cool atmosphere. 200 West Miner Street, Yreka. Located in the National Historic District. Take Central Yreka Exit form I-5 go West, on the corner of Miner and Broadway Streets. Street parking and parking lots nearby to the North one block.
Strings ~ Italian & American Food. West Miner Street in the National Historic District. Brand new to Yreka, moved from Mt. Shasta City.

Shasta Valley Wildlife Viewing Area: This Wildlife Area contains 4,657 acres of Great Basin juniper woodland, riparian forest, seasonal wetlands and crop lands, with Mt. Shasta as a backdrop. Three lakes within this area provide trout fishing. Map available at DFG website. Approximately 8 miles east of Yreka on State Highway 3, 1 1/2 miles east of Montague on Ball Mountain Road.

Collier Rest Area off of Interstate 5:

If traveling from the north and heading south, be sure and stop here, it is a great place to have a picnic, and visit the Collier Interpretative Center and pick up brochures and information about things to do in Siskiyou County! It is also a great place to get a nice view of the Klamath River.

Things to See and Do Along Hwy 97

Be sure and take advantage of the wonderful scenery you will view and stop and take some wonderful photographs!

Weed, California ~ Skatepark ~ A large skateboard park is open to the public in Weed, CA. Stop and take a break and get a little exercise! Take Hwy 97 out of Weed going North, just before leaving town look for a Mini Mart, just past the Mini Mart you should see signs turning right. Visit Windamere Arabians ~ Learn the history and lure of this fascinating breed of horses. See the beauty of these magnificent animals. (530) 938-3558

Golf at Weed's Tricky 9 ~ The Weed Golf Club is right off the north I-5 exit at Weed. A lovely 9 hole course follows a creek right under the shadow of Mt. Shasta. (530) 938-9971.

Pluto's Cave ~ Pluto's Cave was formed by an eruption of basaltic lava and is one of the main feeder tubes that carried lava into Shasta Valley. This cave has a large diameter and an established trail. Contact the Klamath National Forest, Goosenest Ranger District at 37805 Highway 97, Macdoel, California 96058 or call (530) 398-4391. This cave is located near Road A-12 about 3.3 miles from Highway 97. Be sure you follow good caving rules, stay on the trail, bring extra flashlights, protect the cave's delicate ecosystem.

Mt. Shasta Lavender Farms ~ Open during mid-June to mid-July. (530) 926-2651 Pick Lavender, walk the Lavender Labyrinth, visit the unique Lavender Shop. Take Road A-12 to the west off of Hwy 97 a few miles north of Weed, Turn on Harry Cash Road, go about 1 1/2 miles, entrance will be at the east. For more details view their web page at: Mt. Visit the Living Memorial Sculpture Garden ~ One will find the Sculpture Garden about 13 miles North of Weed on Hwy 97. It was created by Vietnam veteran, Dennis Smith. It is just past the road A-12 that takes one to the Lavender Farms. See it on the west side of the road. Parking and restrooms are available. Free admission.

Play at Deer Mountain Snowmobile Park during the winter months. Contact the Fun Factory Rentals for snowmobile rentals and tours. Also ask them about summer activities! Information: (530) 926-5387 or (530) 926-Lets Ride

Fish at Juanita Lake. Boat launch or walk the shore of this secluded lake only a few miles off of Hwy 97. See the NFS website for directions.

Visit Butte Valley Wildlife Area. Take Meiss Lake Road west of Macdoel. Butte Valley Wildlife Area information.

Visit Butte Valley Museum ~ Located at 500 Butte Street, Dorris, CA. (530) 397-2707. Open seasonally. Call first for hours.

See the Tallest Flagpole West of the Mississippi ~ Located on the Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway in Dorris, the pole is 200 feet tall!

See Bald Eagles at Wildlife Refuges ~ From December through February the Klamath Basin is host to the largest population of bald eagles in the 48 states. The lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuge was named the first waterfowl refuge in the U.S. by President Teddy Roosevelt. There is a 10 mile auto tour and photo-blinds available for public use for the photographer enthusiast. See more information here at the Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuge website.

How to get here: Travel Interstate 5 heading north to the third and last exit (#776) see the sign for the Yreka Travel Plaza from the Interstate and take the exit going east on Montague Road. Turn right at first stop light, park will be straight ahead less than 1/4 mile.

Amenities: The Yreka RV Park is the newest commercial park in the area. The office is open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. They boast 102 spaces and can accommodate any size rig, all or most being pull-throughs. The RV park offers Wi-fi, cable TV hookups, restrooms (ADA accommodations) and laundry facilities as well as a group meeting room. Pets are welcome. Even though the park is sparse of trees and greenery, it is very clean and provides a broad view of the neighboring mountains and town.

What to do: Yreka RV Park is located nearby to many services, all within a short drive. Within about a mile plus one can find major grocery stores, gas stations, a hospital, and full service RV repair. The excellent Siskiyou County Museum is within a short distance as well as the local library, parks, movie theater, art galleries, antique shops, restaurants, etc., and the Klamath National Forest Headquarters. Yreka is home to a National Historic District and it can be found at the central exit off of I-5. There is a nice walking tour of both the commercial district as well as Third Street, a residential district. A walk around town should include a visit to the Siskiyou County Courthouse and see the largest gold display south of the Yukon. During the summer months a ride on the Blue Goose Train through the Shasta Valley is a great way to spend an afternoon. The Yreka Chamber of Commerce has a welcome center at the corner of Broadway and Miner Streets, (take the central Yreka exit off Interstate 5) be sure and stop in and pick up maps, brochures and other items of interest. A visit to the Yreka History Blog will give one a taste of the history of this gold rush town.

Out of the way and often private camping area, suitable for tents, small campers, and possibly small trailers. Parts of the access road are quite narrow, check with Forest Service for details prior to traveling in this area.

Location/address: Located 23 miles southwest of the town of Callahan on Hwy 3 (Forest Route 93). Campground sign was missing at last visit. Look for “Certification Area” sign to help locate campground from road. From Yreka and Interstate 5 travel Hwy 3 from Yreka to Fort Jones and on to Callahan, this portion of the drive is 41 miles. Together with the "leg" from Callahan to the campground will be approximately 64 miles. Note the majority of the route is on small 2 lane country roads with portions one lane wide.

There is a wonderful natural swimming hole that is a welcome place on hot summer days. The deep clear pools are great for fishing. Poison oak in the area. Campsites offer picnic tables and grills.

How to get here: Heading North on Interstate 5, turn off at the first Yreka exit (#774) turn left and go to the first stop light. Turn left onto Hwy 3 (Fort Jones Road) and drive towards Fort Jones. Follow maps and signs to Callahan, California about 41 miles from Yreka. At Callahan take Forest Hwy 93, (aka as Cecilville Road) along the South Fork of the Salmon River and travel about 45 miles along this route to the campsite. You will pass Cecilville before arriving at the campsite.

The drive from Yreka to Callahan on Hwy 3 is a very pleasant drive much of the year, you will drive past family farms, cool looking old farm buildings, and see pastures of contented animals, not to mention wildlife ~ you will likely see deer munching out in the alfalfa fields!

You will find abundant photographic opportunities in the Scott Valley while driving Hwy 3!

Quigley's Store & RV Park

Located right on the bank of the Klamath River one can find the historic Quigley's Store and RV Park!

While driving down the State of Jefferson Byway (California Hwy 96) one can find Quigley's Store and RV Park. This place is worth a stop even if you aren't ready to call it a day and find a place to camp. Walking inside the store is like a portal to the past, stepping on oiled tongue and groove wooden floors, and a market that has a little bit of most everything! The area was formerly visited by President Hoover as he was friends of the original owner, Willis Quigley. They also have a nice little Deli and great spot to eat out on the deck or cozy tables inside. One can find a light meal there for either Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner ~ if they are open food will be available. The summer months this place is frequently full, but still worth the stop.

If you are looking for a very casual, out of the way place to visit this might be just the ticket! Area attractions include the Klamath National Forest, not to mention the scenic Klamath River with fishing and rafting right at your doorstep. Nearby is a 9 hole golf course, a shooting range, and hunting in the area during appropriate seasons for bear, deer, turkey and quail. Along the Klamath River one can watch gold mining operations and learn the area's vast gold mining history.

The RV facilities include cable TV with hookups. There are laundry facilities, horseshoe pit, a sandy beach along the river, with canoeing, rafting, and kayaking. Thirteen of the 20 RV sites are located along the river with access. The park has 20 amp electrical service, a comfort station, and the roads and sites are graveled. A typical site is 25' X 40' and can accommodate up to a 40' rig. Pets are allowed, but must be on leash.

Directions to Quigleys:
From Yreka travel approximately 8 miles North on Hwy 263 (Historic Hwy 99) until you cross the Klamath River Bridge and then turn left on Hwy 96 (The Jefferson State Byway) then travel 15 miles west. From Interstate-5, turn off at Collier's Rest Stop (North of Yreka) and travel west on Hwy 96 17 miles to Quigley's. The park is on the south side (River side) of Hwy 96.

This is a well-established commercial establishment open year round within the city limits. The trailer park is located right off Interstate 5 at the first exit heading north. Waiiaka offers full hookups, laundry room, wifi, cable TV, and most sites are pull through. This park is affiliated with "Good Sam" Parks. The park boasts of shady spots, and a view of a typical site is shown in one of the pictures above. They have a self serve process for travelers just wanting to use the dump station service for a small fee. The office is open part time, but sign in sheets and directions are posted at the office. There are some full time residents in this park and during fair season in August the park is generally quite full as it is located next to the fairgrounds.

Turn right at Sharps Road and travel less than 1/4 mile to the entrance of Waiiaka Trailer Haven.

Campground is in forested area adjacent to Scott River Road and at water's edge, however, located above on a cliff. Shaded area in trees. Undergrowth dry in mid to late summer. Wildlife may include black bears, deer, mountain lions, birds of prey. Poison oak may be in the area.

Services: Store and services 17 miles at Fort Jones. Major supplies in Yreka on Interstate 5. Automobile fuel services available in Fort Jones. Nearest Hospital: Yreka, however, emergency medical services available in Fort Jones.

Directions from Yreka: Take the first exit (heading north) from Yreka on Interstate 5 for Highway 3. Turn south from the first stop light after exit at intersection towards Fort Jones. Travel past WalMart and drive to Fort Jones, about 15 miles. Note: If towing a trailer, parts of the road is steep in some areas, but passable. Drive through the town of Fort Jones and continue on Hwy 3 until the Scott River Road which will on the right just at the end of town. The road will be at the corner where the Scott River Ranger District Station is located. Follow the Scott River Road for approximately 17 miles. Just prior to the campground a small bridge will be crossed.

General Description: Campground is in forested area adjacent to Hiway 96 and at water's edge of the Klamath River. Shaded area in trees. Undergrowth dry in mid to late summer. Wildlife may include black bears, deer, mountain lions, birds of prey. Poison oak may be in the area.

Services: Nearby store for basic supplies at Seiad Valley or Happy Camp. Major supplies available in Yreka on I-5. Automobile fuel services may be available in Happy Camp at card lock station. Nearest Hospital: Yreka, however ambulance service is located in Happy Camp.

Directions from Yreka: Follow Main Street out of town going North (also known as Hwy 263, Hwy 3, and old Hwy 99). Follow the Shasta River until the road intersects Hwy 96 (about 7 miles). Turn west and follow the Klamath River on Hwy 96 approximately 60 miles. Once you pass Seiad Valley (very small town) travel about 5 miles west and look for the campground on the river side of the road.

Location/address: Located on Hiway 96 about 5 miles west of the small town of Seiad Valley. Approximately 10+ miles east of the town of Happy Camp.

This is a commercial establishment open from April 1 through October 31, snow permitting. Close to Interstate 5 at Mt. Shasta City. Great for weekend or longer camping, and a pleasant place to stay while traveling I-5 en route. The campground offers a wide variety of camp spaces from full hook up, to water and electric only, to simple tent spots. Cabins and other accommodations are also available.

Great fishing, boating, swimming, relaxing, and a nice hiking trail around the lake. Nice boat ramp. Grocery store on site as well as small eatery with pizza and similar foods. Total number of camping spots unknown, but information can be obtained during the season via phone.

Lake Siskiyou is a local favorite for day use as well as for longer camping, some campsites are near the lake and others are a bit more secluded. The images above show a photo of the lake at the marina with the fishing dock in view along with Mt. Shasta in the background and the image on the left shows a sample of one of the campsites along the main road in the park ~ please note this image was taken when the campground was closed during winter. Summers generally have pleasant days and a bit cooler evenings.

How to get there: From Interstate 5 take the Central Mt. Shasta exit at W. Ream Avenue. Travel West. Go to the stop sign at Forest Route #26 (aka as West A. Barr Rd.) and travel South. (turn left) Continue on West A. Barr Rd. (Forest Route #26), stay to the right when you come to a Y in the road. Travel past the Mt. Shasta Resort Golf Course (will be to the South) and continue down this road. Shortly past the Golf Course Lake Siskiyou will be visible as you cross a small bridge. Continue on this road for a couple of miles as you travel around the West side of the Lake. Look for signage at the entrance on your right.

Lake Shastina Public Access Camping

Location/address: Dwinnell Way, Lake Shastina, Weed, CA
This campground is located near Mt. Shasta about 7 miles from Interstate 5.

Driving Directions: Heading North on Interstate 5, Take exit #751 at the Edgewood/Gazelle exit. (This is just past the town of Weed, and before the Weed Airport.) Recommend you do not try to find this in the dark if unfamiliar with area one might find it difficult to find.
· At exit turn right, within a few yards you will come to Edgewood Road. Turn Left! (There is a camping sign that indicates right, but that will take you to a different place.)
· Travel down Edgewood Road heading north, shortly you will come to the “town” of Edgewood as you cross the railroad tracks, don’t blink! Keep to the left. Travel about one mile until you come to a T in the road at Jackson Ranch Road.
· Jackson Ranch Road is not well marked, but does have a small standard street sign; turn right.
· Travel on Jackson Ranch road for roughly 5 miles.
· Look for the brown sign (small) that says Lake Shastina Public Access at Dwinnell Way, the road will be on your left.
· Turn left on Dwinnell Way; follow to the campground.

General description: A small county campground with minimal amenities, however, it is off the frantic I-5 but adjacent to a home development area and seasonal lake. Good roads to the campsite. Parking areas are dirt, some are reasonably level. Some pull thru type-sites. Nearby at the home development area is a golf course and restaurant (not within easy walking distance), other services may be found in nearby Weed, California, or Mt. Shasta City. Great place to pull off, fix dinner, relax, and stay overnight while driving I-5. Large 5th wheels and class C motor homes may find most spaces tight with overhanging trees.

Sarah Totten Campground (NFS) Hwy. 96

Beaver Creek Campground (NFS)

Location/address: Located on Beaver Creek Road approximately 4 miles North from Highway 96 (State of Jefferson Highway).

Directions from Yreka: Accessible off of Interstate 5 at Yreka, Ca. From Yreka take Main Street going north. Main Street is Historic Hwy 99, currently known as Hwy 263 or Hwy 3. Travel about 7 miles to intersect Hwy 96 (State of Jefferson Highway). Take a hard left and travel 15 miles West, turn right (north) on Beaver Creek Road go approx 4 miles. If the pavement ends you have gone a little too far. Beaver Creek Campground will be a right turn off the road.

General description: Nicely secluded alongside Beaver Creek. Good trout fishing. Dirt/Gravel parking, but several nice flat spaces. Pit toilet, but at last visit, clean and new within last 2 years.

Nearby Services: Groceries 4 miles at Quigley’s Store (Hwy 96) or going East, Yreka, going West, Happy Camp. Full Service Hospital in Yreka.

Indian Scotty Campground (NFS)

Notes: This is one of those great campgrounds loved by locals. Quiet and beautiful. Right on the lovely Scott River. Great for tent campers, trailers, RV's, etc.

Location/address: Located off of Scott River Road approximately 14 miles from the town of Ft. Jones.

From Interstate 5: Exit at Yreka, exit # 773 (most southern exit) go west to intersection of S. Main St. and Ft. Jones Road (Hwy 3). Turn and go southwest on Hwy 3 about 17 miles to Ft. Jones. Some steep hills to note if pulling a trailer. At Ft. Jones continue through town until you reach the intersection of Scott River Road. Turn west on Scott River Road (County Rd. 7F01) about 18 miles. The road will eventually narrow, but is passable. Watch for Forest Route 44N45 on left across bridge. Indian Scotty Campground will be ½ mile on right.

Services: Groceries and supplies available in Yreka and Ft. Jones. Hospital in Ft. Jones and Yreka.

Can be hot during summer days. Fishing in river alongside campground includes trout and steelhead. Tubing and swimming along with rafting and kayaking. Trails near the campground. Bears and other wildlife in area, but not often seen. Poison oak possible in the area. Campsites offer picnic tables and grills. Water is potable, but has high iron content. Currently new pipes and filtering system is being installed.

Trailer/RV suitability: Dirt/gravel roads in campground, a little bumpy. Max spur 65 feet. Lots of trees and some lower branches.

Location/address: Located on Hwy 96 approximately 4 miles East from Historic Hwy 99 (aka Hwy 263 and State Hwy 3) intersection a few miles north of Yreka, California.

Directions from Yreka: Accessible off of Interstate 5 at Yreka, Ca. From Yreka take Main Street going north. Main Street is Historic Hwy 99, currently known as Hwy 263 or Hwy 3. Travel about 7 miles to intersect Hwy 96 (State of Jefferson Highway). Take a hard left and travel 4 miles East. Campground will be on left down a hill.

Notes: This is a nice campground for RV's, tents, trailers, bikers and all others. Large motor homes (Class C) may find it unsuitable. Maximum spur is 34 feet. A easy choice for I-5 travelers wanting a "get away" spot for the evening while transiting the area. Great for fishing, relaxing, lots of shade. Right on the river.

Tree of Heaven Birding Nature Trail: There is a 1/4 mile trail that begins at the campground area and winds along the riparian habitat of the Klamath River. There are interpretive signs that cover bird identification, adaptations, habitat selection and fire ecology.
